On the opposite bank of the Thames are The Saatchi Gallery and Waterloo Station which is currently the London Terminal for Eurostar trains which whisk you away to Paris or Brussels but in October 2007 the Eurostar terminal will transfer to King’s Cross Station on the northern side of the Thames

The first parliament was held here in 1275 but Westminster did not become parliament’s permanent home until 1532. 

The only remaining parts of the original palace are Westminster Hall and the Jewel tower. The rest burned down in a fire in 1834 and was rebuilt in neo Gothic style by Charles Barry and Augustus Pugin. 

The public have access to the visitors’ galleries in both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The best spectacle is Prime Minister’s Question time which is on Wednesdays but for which you have to obtain a ticket in advance from your M.P if you are a British Resident or from your Embassy if you are not.

Parliament does not sit at Christmas, Easter and in the Summer during which time there are guided tours.

Tower of London

The Tower of London. The building of the Tower commenced shortly after William the conquerer arrived in England in 1066. It was used as a fortress. Later it was a royal palace and then a royal prison.

It is where the Crown Jewels are kept and put on display. This is one thing you must not miss when you visit London.
