When Queen Anne came to the throne in 1702 John Churchill,1st Duke of Marlborough and his wife Sarah were well established members of the royal circle.

Marlborough, a military genuis won a decisive battle at Blindheim or Blenheim. Queen Anne was so grateful she gave Marlborough the Manor of Woodstock and said she would build a house for him there at her own expense.

The architect chosen was John Vanbrugh who already had masterpieces to prove his ability in Greenwich Hospital and Castle Howard.

The result is a magnificent Palace which is still home to the Dukes of Marlborough.

Blenheim was the birthplace in 1874.of Sir Winston Churchill. He was the son of Randolph Spencer Churchill who was a younger brother of the 8th Duke of Marlborough.
